Wat Tilok Aram (Tilok Aram temple) located in the middle of Kwan Phayao. It has lasted here for more than 500 years based on the evidence of stone inscriptions excavated around the temple. It reveals that this temple was built during 2019-2029 B.E. as King Tilokkarat of the Lanna Kingdom of Chiang Mai ordered Phraya Yuthishthira, the governor of Phayao to build it up. After the department of fisheries built a barrier to store water in the reservoir, the ancient communities and temples were submerged, as so Tilok Aram temple. Right now, it can be seen only the top of the brick chedi protruding from the water, which the villagers call “San Tat Klang Nam” which means the core element in the middle of the water. Then there was a restoration of the chedi, so that people can come to worship there. There is a rowboat service from Kwan Phayao Pier to the temple every day from 08.30 am. to 5.00 pm. which takes only 15 minutes for one round trip. The rowboat fee is 30 baht per person. For more information, please contact Phayao Kwan Rowing Club tel. 08 9433 7311. On important Buddhist days; for example, Makha Bucha Day, Visakha Bucha Day and Asanha Bucha Day, there will be a candle festival in the middle of the water around Phra That Chedi in the middle of Kwan Phayao. This is the only tradition in the world that you cannot miss.
